ANTIQUE ISLAMIC INDIAN HUQQA PIPE |

|
This circa 1800 water pipe (huqqa) has a floral decoration, stars and Arabic writing, and is
made of copper with silver overlaid. The motifs are stylized, in accordance with Islamic tradition that prefers abstract or
calligraphic floral themes to animal or human representations. The bell shape of the huqqa is the result of developments that
took place around the 1730s and 1740s when this new shape superseded the spherical belly form that had previously been fashionable.
Height: 7 inches. The huqqa pipe is used for smoking tobacco, which was introduced to India in the late sixteenth century.
The tobacco is placed in a cup on top of the pipe, and lit. When the smoker inhales, the smoke is drawn from the smoldering
tobacco, down through the body of the pipe, bubbling through a bowl of water at the bottom, and up into a long thin tube which
is held to the mouth. |
